Driver Uninjured, Vehicle Destroyed By Fire During Morning Rush Hour (Thursday, April 3, 2025)
Sandy Hook VFR was dispatched at 07:24 to I-84 West near Exit 10 for a reported car fire. Chief Anthony Capozziello arrived within minutes and confirmed a fully involved vehicle just prior to the offramp.
CT State Police closed the interstate for a brief period. Quint 440 and Tanker 9 responded with crews and quickly knocked down the fire. The vehicle’s fuel tank failed and began leaking, at whick time Tanker 49 was also added to the call.
Firefighters knocked down the fire and then began cleanup efforts. Attention was also paid to the embankment to the immediate north of the roadway, down which some fuel had flowed.
One lane of the interstate was reopened to begin moving traffic past the scene. Highway traffic was slow for up to 8 miles at one point, with very slow movement back to Exit 15 in Southbury.
Secondary roads in Sandy Hook Center and Church Hill Road are seeing additional traffic as well.
Sandy Hook returned to service at 09:40.
