Sandy Hook and Botsford Fire firefighters were dispatched to an appliance fire just before 2:30 pm on a snowy Saturday afternoon. While en route to the scene a town public works employee plowing in the area came over the radio and advised that smoke was showing from the upstairs window of the dwelling.
Sandy Hook Assistant Chief Anthony Capozziello arrived on scene confirmed a structure fire and assumed command. Engineer Steve Stohl backed the Quint up the driveway and a 2 1/2" line was pulled to the front door of the residence and up the stairs to the second floor bathroom where the dryer was on fire.
Engine 441 was next on scene and dropped the 5" line up the driveway. The fire was knocked down very quickly. The attic was checked for extension and the house was vented.
The second floor sustained smoke and water damage. Less than 500 gallons of water was used.
Newtown Hook & Ladder, Hawleyville FD, Dodgingtown FD, Stevenson FD, Monroe FD and Southbury were also called in for assistance (tankers, RIT and covering stations).
The mission of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., Inc. is to strive for excellence in the performance of prevention of loss of life, personal injury and damage from fire, medical and other emergencies of any or all persons when called upon. We shall do this by maintaining a high standard of training and public education and act and perform in a safe, courteous and professional manner.
Volunteer firefighters display a flashing blue light to warn other motorists when they are responding to emergencies in their personal vehicles.
While Connecticut Motor Vehicle laws do not require motorists to pull over to the right, please be courteous and let them pass.
Remember: The faster we can get to the scene of a fire, an accident or a medical call, the sooner we can save lives. After all, you wouldn't want anyone to delay our response time if you needed to call 911, would you?
When you see the blue light, move to the right.
