With an additional location to collect donations, this year's Fill The Fire Trucks was among the most successful to date.
Firefighters from Sandy Hook, Hawleyville and Hook & Ladder once again staged in front of Big Y World Class Market on Queen Street and Botsford members were in Sand Hill Plaza on South Main Street, which are both traditional collection points. Dodgingtown staged outside its firehouse, on Dodgingtown Road, offering a new location for the public to drop off items to prepare Thanksgiving meals and other items for FAITH Food Pantry.
Due to COVID-19, additional tables were set up this year, to collect donations as they were dropped off by the public. Items were then sorted by firefighters, following social distancing protocols.
Firefighters also wore facemasks during the event.
At the end of the five-hour collection, firefighters delivered 177 boxes full of food, 80 turkeys, and $3,863 in financial donations to the food pantry.
August 12, 2021: Burlington Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter-EMT Colin McFadden, 26, died after falling ill while at the scene of a three-alarm structure fire.
The mission of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., Inc. is to strive for excellence in the performance of prevention of loss of life, personal injury and damage from fire, medical and other emergencies of any or all persons when called upon. We shall do this by maintaining a high standard of training and public education and act and perform in a safe, courteous and professional manner.
Volunteer firefighters display a flashing blue light to warn other motorists when they are responding to emergencies in their personal vehicles.
While Connecticut Motor Vehicle laws do not require motorists to pull over to the right, please be courteous and let them pass.
Remember: The faster we can get to the scene of a fire, an accident or a medical call, the sooner we can save lives. After all, you wouldn't want anyone to delay our response time if you needed to call 911, would you?
When you see the blue light, move to the right.
